In the factory: Spotlight on pattern matching with Thabied Slamdien

Welcome to the first instalment of our In the factory series — a behind-the-scenes look at the people whose skill, focus, and craftsmanship define the quality that Jo Fensham is known for. While upholstery is often admired only in its finished form, every beautifully aligned seam and perfectly finished cushion begins long before the final stitch. It begins with the hands and eyes of our team.
Today, we spotlight Thabied Slamdien, whose expertise in pattern matching plays a pivotal role in the precision of our work.
What is pattern matching — and why does it matter?
Many of the fabrics used in yacht interiors feature stripes, geometric patterns, prints, or a nap — the directional texture you find in velvets, which appear darker or lighter depending on how the fibres lie. These fabrics demand a highly specialised cutting process to ensure that the pattern flows seamlessly across each panel, even when multiple pieces must be joined.
When pattern matching is done correctly, a cushion or upholstered panel looks as though it has been cut from a single continuous piece of fabric — even though it may include several hidden seams. This requires:
- Exact alignment
- Careful selection of fabric placement
- Deep understanding of pattern repeat
- Skilled hand-cutting
- Close collaboration between cutting and sewing teams
The visual impact is subtle but powerful. High-end upholstery is defined by this level of precision.

The craft and patience behind the process
For fabrics that require pattern matching, the cutting process can become double, triple, or even quadruple the standard production time. Each section must be positioned by hand, measured, checked, and cut with absolute accuracy.
Unlike other components in our workflow that may benefit from laser-guided processes, pattern-matched pieces are cut entirely by hand — a task that demands a steady hand, strong technical understanding, and years of experience. This is where Thabied excels.
His work ensures that every pillow, backrest, saloon seat, and headboard achieves the crisp, seamless finish that yacht owners expect from a luxury interior.
From cutting table to sewing room
Once the panels are cut, they move to the sewing department, led for our custom projects by Razan, whose expertise in pattern-matching sewing ensures that the lines continue perfectly once stitched. Even a few millimetres of misalignment can disrupt the visual flow — precision here is everything.
The partnership between Thabied and Razan demonstrates how marine upholstery is a true team effort. Each stage relies on the expertise of the previous one.
Craftsmanship that begins before the first stitch
High-quality yacht upholstery is not defined only by the final appearance. It is built through the unseen decisions, the patience, the technical skill, and the craftsmanship that happen behind the scenes.
At Jo Fensham, we believe in honouring the people who make this possible. Their hands, experience, and commitment ensure that every vessel we work on — from custom superyachts to production catamarans — receives the level of quality we stand for.
This is the heart of our In the factory series:
Celebrating the people behind the precision.
