Built for life at sea
Unlike residential or automotive environments, the marine environment is a uniquely harsh setting for any material. Sun exposure, salty air, moisture, constant movement, and confined storage spaces all conspire to test the limits of fabrics, threads, foam and fixings.
That’s why marine upholstery can’t simply be beautiful — it needs to be engineered for endurance.
We only work with proven marine-grade materials that are specifically designed for the challenges of the ocean. For exterior cushions, these considerations are critical:
- UV-resistant fabrics that retain their colour, structure, and performance despite constant sun exposure
- UV-resistant threads that can withstand the harsh sunlight, salt water and constant movement
- Quick-drying foam that prevents water retention and mildew or mould build-up
- Non-corrosive zips and fasteners that remain smooth-operating even in humid or salty environments
- Construction methods that ensure longevity and that hold their shape over time
It is the small details like drainage placement or the thread used for stitching that make a noticeable difference in how an item performs after several seasons on deck
Custom comfort, tailored performance
Exterior cushions must be comfortable as well as withstand the elements. Interior upholstery must be comfortable and must often fulfil a dual purpose. The saloon seating area on a yacht, for example, must usually function as both a sitting room and a dining room, and creating one seat that comfortably fulfils both these requirements needs a careful balance between design and materials.
Below-deck furnishings must also not succumb to moister, so the choice of fabric is essential. We usually advise our clients to steer away from natural fibres, such as cotton, linen, silk and wool because these fabrics are more likely to stay damp and to gather mildew or rot. Although we do make an exception for our mattress covers, which are covered with our custom-made bamboo-polyester fabric, quilted with wool batting. This is because we believe that comfortable sleep depends on good temperature regulation and this is best achieved with natural fibres.
In custom and semi-custom vessels, owners often take a personal role in selecting their finishes. At Jo Fensham, we take our clients through each step of the process, guiding the choices from many ranges of high-quality internationally sourced fabrics, balancing aesthetics with technical performance.
Our team advises on:
- Fabric weight and durability, which varies depending on whether the application is for saloons, berths, headboards, or accent details
- Fabric colour, tone, and weave, selected not only for personal taste but also to complement the yacht’s cabinetry, flooring, lighting, and hull colours
- Foam density, recovery and build-up, tailored to how much support is needed in different areas (e.g., firmer foam in helm seating, softer foam in lounging areas, reticulated foam for deck areas) and whether or not a layered, laminated build-up is required
- Stitching and edging details, which can elevate the finish while enhancing longevity
- Construction, which will include whether or not the piece is zipped, or upholstered onto a frame or board, where zips are placed, what type of fixings are used and where and how they are placed, stitch length, thread thickness and type, how the piece is cut, where seams are placed, how and if seams are reinforced, whether or not inner covers are required and even which sewing machine to use for a particular type of fabric or application
Each item is hand-finished to suit the scale and style of the vessel. The same approach applies whether we’re outfitting a fully customised performance catamaran or supplying cushions for a limited-production cruiser.
